How to buy authentic Nigerian art online, and check it's real in ten seconds

A buyer's guide for collectors in the UK, US and beyond: how to find contemporary Nigerian art, check who made it, pay safely and get it shipped.

Contemporary Nigerian art is some of the most exciting work being made anywhere, and much of it is sold straight from the artist's studio. That's good for artists and buyers, but it raises two questions for anyone buying from abroad: who made this, and how do I pay safely?

1. Check who made it

Every work in the Artmiabo Collection was sealed by the artist who made it. Each has three words (for example stone · kiln · anchor). Type them at artmiaboseal.art/check, or scan the code on the poster, and you see the artist's name, the date it was sealed, their own words about the work, and whether the record is intact.

2. Read the artist's own words

Each listing carries the artist's statement, in their words. It tells you what you're buying in a way a size and a medium never will.

3. Pay safely

Buyers pay on the work's page by card, bank transfer or USSD, through Paystack. The artist receives 72% directly. You get a receipt, and the work's public certificate passes to you.

4. Shipping abroad

Buying from the UK, US or elsewhere? Reserve the work free on its page. We reply within 24 hours with the delivery cost, and you pay only if you're happy with it.

Questions buyers ask

Is a seal a certificate of authenticity?

No. A seal is a dated, public record made by the artist and locked against change. It's strong evidence of who made a work and when; it isn't a legal certificate on its own.

Can AI-generated images be sealed?

No. Only work the artist made can be sealed. AI images made in the Style Studio are labelled as AI and are never sealed.

How much of the price does the artist get?

72%: sent at once if the artist's bank is connected, otherwise paid to the artist within 7 days of the sale.

Can I buy from outside Nigeria?

Yes. Prices show in dollars and pounds, and shipping is quoted before you pay.
