Rivers, boats and kings: art from the Niger Delta

Contemporary artists from Nigeria's Niger Delta paint and photograph its waterways, fishing boats, markets and Amanyanabo festivals. Works sealed at AMIAF 2026.

The Niger Delta is a world of creeks, wharves and wooden boats, of fishing at dawn and festivals for the Amanyanabo, the traditional rulers of the riverine kingdoms. At the Artmiabo International Art Festival in Abuja, artists from the region brought that world with them.

The waterfront

Soiduate Ogoye-Atanga photographs the Delta's working boats at rest: idle canoes on the mud at low tide, an evening wharf, boats moored under a wide sky. Benjamin Ejiohuo paints the catch itself, in scraped, built-up layers you can almost feel.

Drums and kings

Henry Ibama Bala frames his festival scenes in Ankara cloth: drummers in the heat of the day, and the procession of an Amanyanabo. Sotonye Allen Orubu's "Kaibari na Daasura" stitches colour and cloth into a Kalabari scene of people carrying goods through sunlit fields.
